La misión de Las artes judío-latinoamericanas es triple:

  • Hacer conocer, promocionar y celebrar la literatura y el arte producidos por escritores y artistas plásticos de la América Latina;
  • Proveer a académicos la materia prima que necesitarán para hacer investigaciones sobre estas artes;
  • Emplear las Humanidades Digitales como un medio para exhibir y diseminar las artes de una cultura que no está bien conocido ni en el mundo académico ni tampoco por el pú

Estos escritores y artistas vienen de comunidades judías difundidas por la inmensidad de la América Latina. 470.000 judíos viven allí, descendentes de inmigrantes de Alemania, la Europa del Este, algunos países que rodean el Mediterráneo y del Medio Este. Su cultura es influída por las tradiciones y modos de pensar judío tanto como sus alrededores hispanoparlantes o lusoparlantes.

Su literatura y arte trata a rabinos y nazis, judíos observantes y laïcos. Las obras están llenas de alegría y luto, realismo y fantasía, versiones nuevvas de historias bíblicas y talmúdicas, el amor y el odio y memorias de niñeces judías. Algunos que muestran el interior del alma o meditan sobre los símbolos y prácticas del judaísmo, otros que protestan los crímenes antisemitas y los horrores del Holocausto. Otros alaban las ciudades y campos de Latinoamérica. Emplean una constelación de estilos literarios y artístiicos. Los temas que predominan son la identidad y la memoria, las familias judías, la religión judía—sus costumbres y particularidades, lahistoria judía—en particular, la época de la Biblia, las olas de inmigración a América Latina, las muchas dictaduras latinoamericanas, especialmente la última en Argentina; el Holocausto; y el Estado de Israel.

The mission of Latin American Jewish Arts is threefold:

  • To make known, promote and celebrate the literature and art produced by Jewish writers and artists from Latin America:
  • To provide scholars with the primary materials they will need to do research these arts:
  • To employ the Digital Humanites as a medium for exhibiting and dissimating the arts of a culture that is not well-known to the academic world and to the general public.

These writers and artists and come from Jewish communities spread across the vastness of Latin America. 470,000 of Jews live there, descendants of immigrants from Germany, Eastern Europe, some of the countries that board the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Their culture is influenced by Jewish traditions and ways of thinking as well as their Spanish or Portuguese-speaking surroundings.

Their literature and art treats rabbis and Nazis; observant Jews and non-believers. The works are filled with joy and mourning, realism and fantasy, emotion and reflection, new versions of Biblical and Talmudic stories, poems of love and of hate, memories of Jewish childhoods. Some of these poets write about very private things, many meditate on the symbols and practices of Judaism; others protest anti-Semitism and the horrors of the Holocaust; and yet others write in praise of the cities and countryside of Latin America. They employ a constellation of literary and artistic styles. The predominant themes are: identity and its corollary, memory; the Jewish family, Jewish history—in particular, the Biblical period, the waves of immigration to Latin America; the many dictatorships—in particular Argentina one, the Holocaust and the State of Israel.

He aquí la belleza, la profundidad y la variedad de las artes visuales y plásticas creadas por artistas judíos de los países hispanoparlantes y lusoparlantes de América Latina. Este sitio incluye pintura, escultura, tapiz e instalación. La mayoría de los artistas son argentinos por tratarse del país donde hay más judíos. En especial, Buenos Aires tiene una sólida tradición en la producción y la educación estéticas que se ha visto favorecida por la afluencia de gran cantidad de inmigrantes. Uruguay, Perú, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Cuba, México, Bolivia, Colombia y Brasil también están representados en el sitio. Quienes figuran se identifican como judíos, ya sean religiosos o laïcos. Algunos trabajan temas específicamente judíos vida familiar, festividades, inmigración, la Shoá, Bar o Bat Mitzvá y demás ceremonias religiosas. Otros, quizás debido a la consigna de elaborar imágenes talladas, crean formas más abstractas.

Herein is the beauty, depth and variety of the visual and plastic arts created by Jewish artists is in Latin America. The site includes drawing, painting, sculpture, tapestries and installations. The majority of the artists are Argentine, in part, because Argentina is the Latin American country with the largest Jewish population. Buenos Aires, especially, has a solid tradition in art production and education, favored by the influx of a large number of immigrant artists. Artists from Uruguay, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Mexico, Bolivia, Colombia and Brazil also figure prominently. These artists identify themselves as Jews, whether devout or not. Some work on specifically Jewish themes: family life, holidays, immigration, the Holocaust, Bar and Bat Mitvahs and other religious ceremonies. Others, perhaps because of the command to not make graven images, utilized more abstract forms in making Jewish art.
